Webmasters - Grissom
Grissom is one the newer respected community members. He webmasters The Springfields Files and is known for a variety of quality content.

Tell me a little about yourself.

I've been a hardcore Simpsons fan for about 4 years now. I love to work with electronics and computers. I play the guitar, although not very well, and listen to a lot of music. Favorite artists/bands are The Beatles, Ben Folds, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

What is your biggest goal with The Springfield Files?

I strive to eventually reach the level where my site is fairly well known, and a place where people go for all kinds of Simpsons related content. Offering a little bit of everything has always been important to the site.

What makes a good Simpsons site?

It's the right combination of design, content, and true dedication. A nice looking and easy to navigate interface is always important in having a professional looking site. But as all webmasters know, a good design can't save a site with bad content. Offering content that people are really interested in is extremely important. And finally, dedication keeps people returning to a site. Frequent updates = frequent visits.

Do you have any other hobbies outside webpioneering?

As I mentioned before, I do play the guitar. I also enjoy playing a lot of different video games, surfing the web, listening to music, and watching TV.

What are your favorite episodes of OFF?

I have a lot of favorites, but a few off the top of my head are: Cape Fear, The Springfield Files (hence the site name), 22 Short Films About Springfield, Homer The Great, Homie The Clown, The Cartridge Family, Sideshow Bob Roberts, Homer Badman, and Marge Vs. The Monorail.

How do you compare the contemporary Simpsons episodes to those of the Golden Age?

Not even close. The show is in a state of disrepair at this point. Plots are becoming increasingly stale, humor is becoming increasingly Family Guy-ish, and my episode grades are heading consistently down. That special touch that made the golden age as great as it was is missing, and has been since season 9.

Which websites and webmasters have influenced you most throughout your online career?

I think the one site that has influenced me the most would have to be Eric Messinger's Springfield Weekly. It was one of the first Simpsons sites I ever visited, and ever since then I have highly respected Eric's fantastic editorials and in-depth reviews. TSF is modeled after SW in several ways. My editorial and reviews sections were the first parts of TSF that I began working on, and are still, in my eyes, the best part of the site.

How do you feel about Krustylu Studios? Overrated, underrated, shallow, revolutionary?

Highly overrated. I won't hide the fact that I visit the forum occasionally, and still work there, but the site is far from revolutionary. There's some good content and I am partial to the design, especially the flash based homepage, but people who rank it among some of the greatest Simpsons sites ever, LETS for example, are very misguided. The biggest problem with the site at this point is the forum. I've all but given up trying to moderate it. The rest of the staff seems to talk a lot about clearing out all the spamming idiots, but no one actually wants to take action and get it done. The discussion that goes on there most of the time is a joke. Brad would be better off just closing the thing down.

Can you explain to our newer readers what Digital Springfield was all about?

Digital Springfield was a mini site that offered webmaster tutorials on everything from making grabpics to coding HTML and PHP. In the beginning I had a lot of interest in the site from people at the KLS forums. I had tons of tutorials submitted and the site ran very smoothly and was fairly popular for the first few months. After that people began to lose interest and was receiving no submissions. I didn't have time to write many tutorials myself, so the site became pretty much abandoned. I attempted to revamp the whole thing by writing five or six new tutorials and relaunching with a new design, but it didn't work out too well. In the end I merged the site with TSF, and all the content is still available there.

Which film deserves the Oscar for Best Picture this year?

Unfortunately, I haven't been to the movies in months. Any answer I give to this question will not be very accurate.

Do you feel strongly about any particular trends in the community?

People who run sites, but do none of the actual work severely piss me off. If you're going to run a site, don't get a bunch of people to do all the content and the design for you. I respect a site run by one person with very few contributions a lot more than I do a site run by ten different people.

What do you plan on doing after high school?

I'm planning to attend college, but I'm not sure what I want to do for a career. Something with computers, although I'm not sure what.

Will The Simpsons Movie be any good?

I hope so, but sadly I doubt it's going to be. If the trailers reflect the quality of the actual film, we're going to be in a lot of trouble.

I am also a major fan of The Twilight Zone. What is your favorite episode?

Ooh, tough decision. At the moment, I would say The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. However, there is a ridiculous number of fantastic Twilight Zone episodes. There are tons of others that come very close.

You have a respectable DVD collection. How awesome is DVD Aficionado?

Heh, it's pretty awesome. The perfect way to express my nerdy pride in my collection.

Parting words?

Thank you very much for asking me do this interview. I'm proud to join the ranks of accomplished webmasters you've interviewed in the past.
