- Eric Messinger
Eric Messinger is a major player in the community. In addition to
running the biggest editorial-oriented site, he co-moderates the NHC On
the Web section with Jon Levin. His designs are known for a crisp and
simple overtone. |

You've shown resentment in the past
to Springfield Weekly being referred to as "just an opinion site." How
would you categorize it?
If I showed resentment, it's simply because a lot of work has gone into
other parts of the site. The information section, for instance, rarely
ever gets noticed by a lot of people, despite the fact that we've been
slowly building up a very comprehensive and unique section for a long
time. As well, although the media is unquestionably the weakest part of
the site (since neither me or Jason really care about it), it's still a
respectable section, especially the desktops, and some of the
highest-quality screenshots on the net. But if people want to call SW
just an opinion site, then we'll keep trying to work hard to change
their minds
What kind of films, books, music, and TV are you into?
I love The Sopranos, and a lot of the films that are popular with the
"film geek" kids around my age - Wes Anderson + P.T. Anderson movies,
that sort of thing. I just saw "Superman Returns", which was phenomenal.
Best books I've read in the past few years have been from Dave Eggers
and Neil Stephenson, who are two people everyone should check out.
The top 3 Simpsons sites (folder, archive, LETS) is pretty much
generic throughout the community. What would be your 4, 5, and 6 spots?
The Gallery is still a wonderful site. I'm convinced there is wonderful
content scattered all around Simpson Crazy, and that if they ever
organized it right they would have the best site on the net... but it's
also fun to poke around it and discover something you didn't even know
they had. And then for 6 it would be either SW or Destination
Springfield, which isn't updated so much but has an incredible amount of
high-quality media.
In our most recent poll Gorby asks, "How much anticipate of new
episodes the Futurama?" Taking into mind the return of Family Guy, how
do you feel about this news?
I think Futurama is a really smart, fun show. At the same time, I don't
find it nearly as funny (when it's not at its absolute best) as many
television shows, so I'm not terribly excited, just glad to see it get a
second chance. There's nothing like it, and even if it's not the best
it's great to have it around.
What kind of direction do you see the community heading in? Which
lyric is more fitting: "We gotta get out of this place," or, "You gotta
go through hell before you get to heaven"?
It really depends on the show, and especially the movie. Simpsons sites
are going to have more chances for visitors than ever due to the movie,
and the amount of Internet interest that it will inspire, but I'm not
sure if that many new sites are going to pop up because of the lack of
interest in the show as it currently exists. So if the old guard gets
reenergized from the movie, or if a lot of new, competent people show up
and start doing interesting things again, the community should be fine,
but otherwise it might just coast. As for which lyric, I'll go with "Oh
my God, I was wrong - it was Earth, all along!"
Season 17 of The Simpsons is gone (and perhaps forgotten); what did
you think of it?
I thought there were more standouts than any season since 13; but, at
the same time, there were a lot of the same problems popping up week
after week, just like in Seasons 14-16. It was the strongest run of the
show we've seen in a long time, but it was also one of the most
depressing, because the writers could never stay consistent beyond two
or three good episodes in a row.
Have you heard any of William Shatner's new CD, Has Been? If so, did
you like it? Any favorite songs?
Umm... can't say I have
Myspace: hate it or love it?
Hate it.
Is Smithers gay?
I'm gay for Smithers.
What do you think of South Park?
One of the smartest and most consistent television comedies ever made;
puts "The Simpsons" to shame in a lot of areas, but it has the advantage
of different standards in terms of accepted absurdity/content.
What are some major mistakes aspiring webmasters should avoid?
Episode downloads, thinking it's a serious competition, or adding
sections because you feel you're supposed to. Just do what you enjoy or
are good at.
There are quite a few British people involved in the community.
Yeah, it's nice to see. But the British are the best at almost
everything - acting, writing, music - so it would make sense that there
are a lot of British fans active in the community.
What are your favorite episodes of The Simpsons, the ones you watch
over and over?
Lemon of Troy, Deep Space Homer, you Only Move Twice, Homer Vs. The 18th
Amendment, and Homer The Heretic are the ones I usually put for a top 5.
Lemon of Troy is absolutely perfect in its construction, and that's why
it gets the #1; the rest are basically all really, really, really funny.
I guess Homer at his best is unbeatable.
Same question, but replace The Simpsons with Futurama.
The Titanic episode, and the one where Bender is God, are two favorites
that come to mind. The one with the Amazons, also. I'm not enough of an
expert in the show to make a firm pick for any one episode, though.
At what point will you stop looking forward to releases of The
Simpsons on DVD?
I'd say Season 10 is the first one where I won't be buying it for my own
enjoyment, but rather because I feel I need to. Everything up until then
is unquestionably worth the purchase; after that, everything except 12
or 13 is debatable. |
